INDIANAPOLIS — The OpenMRS community has won the best paper contest at MEDINFO 2010, the 13th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics. MEDINFO is organized every three years by the International Medical Informatics Association, and is the largest international conference in the field of medical informatics with over 3000 attendees. The best paper award was presented to in Cape Town, South Africa, by the event’s Scientific Programme Committee, having been selected on the basis of scientific quality, importance and clarity of presentation.
The paper, “Experience Implementing Electronic Health Records in Three East African Countries”, was co-authored by several members of the OpenMRS community throughout East Africa, including Bill Tierney, Marion Achieng, Elaine Baker, April Bell, Paul Biondich, Paula Braitstein, Daniel Kayiwa, Sylvester Kimaiyo, Burke Mamlin, Brian McKown, Nicholas Musinguzi, Winstone Nyandiko, Joseph Rotich, John Sidle, Abraham Siika, Martin Were, Ben Wolfe, Kara Wools-Kaloustian, Ada Yeung, Constantin Yiannoutsos, and the Tanzania-Uganda OpenMRS Consortium.
The Tanzania-Uganda OpenMRS Consortium included National AIDS Control Programme of Tanzania (Dr. Geoffrey Somi), Morogoro Regional Hospital (Dr. Rita Lyamunya, Mayanga Mbaula), Ocean Road Cancer Institute (Dr. Hussein Mtiro, Willy Willifest), Tumbi Special Hospital (Japhal Mwamufupa, Joseph Myalla), Masaka Regional Referral Hospital (Drs. Penina Iutung, Kenya Mugisha, John Ssali, Michael Ssonko), Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (Dr. Peter Masaba, Helen Okwii), Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (Dr. Mwebesa Bwana, Nneka Emenonyu), and the World Health Organization (WHO) (Dr. Mark Spohr, Christopher Bailey).
