We’re excited to announce the release of OpenMRS 3.7.1, and as always, you can try it out right now on our demo at o3.openmrs.org. This release fixes a number of bugs and packs in a whole lot of new features focused on making everyday clinical workflows faster and smoother. Full details are in the release notes.
None of this would be possible without our amazing community of implementers and independent contributors. .This release included over 300 PRs from various organizations including our implementing partners SolDevelo, AMPATH, ICRC, Madiro, Palladium Kenya, PIH, UW I-TECH DIGI, and ePcare alongside dozens of independent and translation contributors.
Key Highlights
Major order basket improvements
Ordering has been improved significantly in this release. Drug dispense quantities are now auto-calculated, you can pin frequently used drugs for quick reuse, give medications future start dates, and pick drugs from a new Browse tab instead of only searching. You can also add allergies without leaving the basket, and implementations can configure which order panels show.
BMI reference ranges
BMI reference ranges have been added to the vitals header, with a toggletip that shows the normal range at a glance.This saves clinicians a manual lookup when reviewing a patient’s biometrics.
Task list in the patient chart
The patient task list is now built into the chart, allowing task-based work to be managed alongside the rest of the patient record. This helps sites that want to move from informal handoffs to proper task queues, without leaving the chart, keeping tasks in the same place clinicians are already working.
Record clinical procedures
A new procedures workflow lets users record clinical procedures directly in the chart, replacing the older read-only procedure overview widget. So instead of just viewing past procedures, clinicians can now record them directly in the chart.
Sticky notes on the patient chart
Staff can now pin short, persistent notes to a patient’s chart that stay visible across visits. This gives care teams a lightweight way to flag important reminders or context without burying them in clinical notes, especially handy for handoffs or patients who come back often.
Print encounters
Encounters can now be printed directly from the chart. This is especially valuable for implementations that still depend on printed records for clinical care, referrals, or administrative processes, and it reduces the need for local workarounds.
Billing enhancements
The billing module has been further stabilized in this release. Bill discounts now come with an audit trail, and refund requests and approvals for paid bills are supported. Bills can also be tied to a patient’s visit, with a dedicated status for each bill line item. On top of that, billing payment status now displays without blocking clinical forms, so care isn’t held up by billing.
Configurable login page
Sites can now brand the login screen with a custom background image or color and show translatable announcement banners, all through configuration.
Behind the scenes
This release also brings some housekeeping under the hood, like the build tooling has moved to Rspack and Vitest, GitHub Actions workflows have been centralized into shared, reusable workflows and the Angular form engine has moved to Angular 20. This means faster builds and easier long-term maintenance for everyone contributing to O3.
