Translate OpenMRS
There are several different ways to help with translations in OpenMRS. We’re still working on a user-friendly tool to make it easier for non-geeks to help with translations, but for now, see this page How to translate OpenMRS.
- There are administrative terms (also called messages) which are used by the user interface to modify the screens and pages to show in different languages. These are currently kept in a source code text file called (for English) messages.properties. Files for other languages are named messages_**.properties. Post a translated file to our developer mailing list and we’ll include it in an OpenMRS release.
- There are also the “concepts” which are the questions and answers which are collected by OpenMRS in forms in the database. These also require both terms which describe the concepts, as well as brief paragraphs which define the concepts. These need to be in multiple languages. Concepts vary from installation to installation, so translation is up to the group that created the concept.
The Millennium Villages Project is implementing OpenMRS in ten different countries throughout Africa in addition to other countries in the Middle East and SE Asia. The African countries are: Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Malawi. They’re looking for people to help do the concept translations as part of a Terminology Service Bureau.
OpenMRS is currently only available in 5 languages: English, Spanish, Portugues, Italian, and French. If you have expertise in multiple languages and would be interested in helping out with translations, please let us know!
