Talk:Summer Of Code 2009 Application

Thanks for writing this aaa.

I guess what this made me think of is something we should do for our next internship round: list on our application page, application dos and donts.

For example:

...do attempt to complete patches ...do interact directly with the mentor assigned to the project(s) you're interested in ...don't assume that your well written application will alone get you accepted

...or a different/better way to put it might be:

Successful applicants:

...submit patches to OpenMRS ...interact directly with the mentor assigned to the project(s) they're interested in

You get the idea.

Just to continue disclosing all conversations I've had with my candidates ...

xxx emailed me earlier tonight to get some constructive criticism on his proposal. I basically said the same thing as you: "It's not you, it's me" .... (wait - that's a different conversation for a different occasion) ... joking aside, I said: "It was not your proposal, but the fact that we had too many good candidates". To some degree, that's definitely true, but there was a definite reason why yyy was selected. Some of it had to do with the fact that yyy just looked better on paper ... but it mostly had to do with yyy's "walk the talk" attitude. Not only did he say he was interested in helping, but he got involved very early and has stayed involved throughout. And even moreso than zzz, who I was really hoping would come through and show me that he was interested by actually finishing a ticket or small project. zzz has definitely been involved, but not to the same extent as yyy. Even when yyy's chances of being selected were in question (when I asked if he'd consider aaa's project), he continued to be involved and to contribute. Anyway, I just figured that (1) it might be good for you guys to know what conversations I've been having with candidates and (2) what my motivations were for choosing yyy (in case that wasn't already clear).
