IRC

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. You are welcome to join the OpenMRS chat room #openmrs on irc.freenode.net.

There are numerous IRC clients from which to choose or you can visit our chat room directly from this page.

Common IRC commands

  • /nick <newnickname> == changes your current nickname to <newnickname>
  • /msg <nickname> <text> == Sends <text> to <nickname> in a private chat window
  • /me <text> == States <text> in a 3rd person kind of way
  • /whois <nickname> == Shows extra info (to only you) about <nickname> person. (might show in a different window)
  • /quit == logs you out of irc

What if no one is answering my question?

IRC is not meant to be a 24/7 helpline with immediate support. The room is a way for developers to get together and ask/answer questions in an asynchronous manner. If your question is not answered right away it may be because no one is awake or no one is paying attention.

Tip: Try addressing someone directly by putting their username into your question. This might get their attention faster.

Tip #2: Try sending an email to the implementers or developer's mailing list: See Contribute for how to sign up and send an email.

What if IRC is blocked?

Some ISPs block the ports needed for IRC. If this is the case for you, then you can use a proxy to join the channel through a web browser.
